Live Suicide on Television

Chubbuck was an American television news reporter who committed suicide during a live television broadcast. Suffering from chronic depression, she had repeatedly spoken to her family at length about her struggles with depression and suicidal tendencies, though she did not inform them of her specific intent beforehand. On the morning of July 15, 1974, Chubbuck confused co-workers by claiming she had to read a newscast to open her program, Suncoast Digest, something she had never done before. That morning’s talk show guest waited across the studio while she sat at the news anchor’s desk. Her news copy actually contained a speculative report of her impending suicide, wherein she conjectured she would be declared dead fourteen hours later. During the first eight minutes of her program, Chubbuck covered three national news stories and then a local restaurant shooting from the previous day. The restaurant was the Beef and Bottle Restaurant at the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport on U.S. 41. The film reel of the restaurant shooting had jammed and would not run, so Chubbuck shrugged it off and said, “In keeping with Channel 40′s policy of bringing you the latest in blood and guts, and in living color, you are going to see another first—attempted suicide.” She drew the revolver and shot herself behind her right ear. Such a sad story... poor lady...blah...blah...blah. She made a suicide and killed herself. It is not problem. It is her life and she can do everything that she wants to do with it. Suicide is one thing, but to do it on a live broadcast ?? She should think about people, how they would be effected when saw her death. My WebPage

Nuray, you said that she can do what she wants, because the life is hers. But you are wrong. Because she did not get or buy her life herself. this life was given to her as a guarantee sad

she has done it on a live broadcats may be to make a show from her death, like event..strange woman dry

Miserable and interesting story. However, I do not agree with you. The life is given you by God,and only God can take your life. It is a sin to kill yourself. huh

I AM RIGHT GOD gave her life to live, but she refused it. It is her problem. she will burn in fire for that, not I crazy

It is one of the most extraordinary stories I have ever heard . She was really stupid .But I do not agree with you. What does it mean that "she can do everything with her life". . Life is given to us to live and save it as much as we can, not to do everything that we want

interesting story Nuray. however, I am angry when I see such kind of people. In my opinion, suicide is business of humble's. those people have no strong character, that is why, when they get on difficulty, they choose the easiest way instead of to live and defeat. To die is easy. Lets live if you can!!!

But i hate those people who commit suicide...For me, Life is worth to enjoy whatever happens...I don't like the people who is in depressions...I don't understand them why they waste time like this, instead of struggling and finding a new way to figure out...They say, '' They are the winners in the life who try to defeat the life and at the end they are succeed''
