The Legitimate Dictator

Yakov Dzhugashvili was  Joseph Stalin’s eldest son.  When the World War 2 broke out , he joined the Soviet army with his father’s " blessings” . Dzhugashvili served as an artillery officer in the Red Army.  In 1941, on 16th July, after getting contused he was taken hostage by the Nazi soldiers in the early stage of the war at the Battle of Smolensk. Then, the German soldiers were informed of his identity by other hostage soviet soldiers. During interrogations Yakov behaved very courageously, honourably.

 His first interrogation:

-Did you submit of your own will or were you taken hostage by force?

-I was taken hostage by force.

-In which way?

-On 12t July, our military group got encircled. I wanted to break  out of the encirclement , but at that time,  I got injured by the splinter of the bomb which exploded next to me  ,and  I lost my consciousness .If I had had  a chance , I would have shot at myself.

-Do you deem captivity   dishonest?

-Yes.

-In your opinion, do the Soviet army have a chance to bring about a fundamental change in the war?

-The war is not over yet.

-What if we get Moscow?

-I cannot conceive that.

-When did you talk to your father last time?

-On 22th June, by phone, when he heard of my joining the army, he said "Go , fight”.

Yakov refusing to make any co-operation with the German soldiers was sent to a hostage camp. The Germans later offered to exchange Yakov for Friedrich Paulus,   German Field Marshal captured by the Soviets after the Battle of Stalingrad. However, Stalin turned the offer down. In return, Joseph Stalin launched such an approach to this proposal that the history included to its memory as a very controversial, debatable step by expressing this statement: "I will not trade a Marshal for a Lieutenant". According to some sources, Hitler also wanted to exchange Yakov for his nephew. Neither was this proposition accepted. In 1943, on 14th April, not being able to bear violence, exasperation which he was exposed to, Yakov run to into the fence screaming to be executed by shooting. There he was shot a  by Nazi soldier, and so did he pass away.

I`m still thinking of what I should have really inferred from the story. Maybe, that`s because I`m not that interested in such kind of historical issues. Anyway, I have to consent with Shalala`s opinion.
Thank you for the information. smile

Thanks for sharing such a nice post smile I would like to add one more interesting fact about that person : 'While Stalin and his wife were arguing about this a shot was heard from Yakov's room. Yakov had shot himself. While she tended to his wounds and sent for a doctor all his father said was, "He can't even shoot straight. ' biggrin And during the war there appeared one German propaganda in 1941. "Do not shed your blood for Stalin! He has already fled to Samara! His own son has surrendered! If Stalin's son has saved himself, then you are not obliged to sacrifice yourself either!"

I disagree with all of you, I appreciate Stalin's this behavior. 3 generals, may be 3 states, 3 plans that can destroy S.U's many plans to win the war.

Nothing can justify this act of his.First of all, he was the leader f the USSR.He was responsible for the countries' citizens life let alone the fact that Jakov was his son.

* Of course
New idea came to me: Stalin was leader of S.U. and back then during the War he had to show that he is "tough" towards everyone, including his son. It may sound weird but I am going to say it: in some way his action increased his authority. He showed that he is equal to everyone. He wanted to show that Yakov was not going to get some privilege because of this.

Thanks for the story!

You're right! He really showed that he was equal to everybody and lost his son as mostly all of the fathers of the USSR. He also was one of the last people (if not the last) to leave Moscow before the Nazy army got close to it. Can you imagine any contemporary leader doing something like that?! wacko

Stalin had steel nerves towards everyone. I think, Stalin's pride made him loose his son. Ofcourse as father he loved Yakov, also Yakov was the eldest son, which means he loved him more, but again his PRIDE.

I'm not shocked or stunned at all. Such people as Stalin, who wield power and take severe measures have no mercy even for the members of their own family. These mighty personalities seem to be made from steel and are not compassionate towards others, no matter how close they are.

You're right, such people seem to be made from steel. I guess, you know that Stalin was not his real surname. His real surname was Dzhugashvili. In fact, the origin of "Stalin" is russian word "сталь"(steel). angry
*Before he became the leader, he strongly admired one person who had that steel character. He decided take an example from him and to be as "steel" as he was. And his new surname reflected his character.
